There is a discrepancy in the campaign logo used by Muhammadu Buhari, presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general election.
Investigation by INDEPENDENT showed that the logo adopted for the President’s campaign was initially used by an educational institution based in the South Carolina, United States.

“Plagiarism may be intentional or reckless, or unintentional,” the Oxford University said.
Winthrop University is a public institution that was founded in 1886.
“NExT LEVEL is a project of the Winthrop University-School Partnership Network in collaboration with Fort Mill School District (York 4), Lancaster County School District, and Rock Hill School District (York 3). It is program is a Professional Development grant funded by the US Department of Education and administered through the Office of English Learner Acquisition (OELA),” the institution said on its website, http://www2.winthrop.edu/rex/rex/next_level.html.
The website also displayed the logo on its website. While the university made use of black and magenta, the Buhari’s campaign team adopted green and red colours.
It was also gathered that another organisation, Entrepreneur Podcast Network, also made use of a similar logo on its website.
The EPN is an organisation dedicated to helping entrepreneurs to succeed and prosper in business.
Details on the website showed that the logo was uploaded at 06.23pm on May 31, 2015.
Both logos on the Winthrop University, Entrepreneur Podcast Network and APC made use of the same font type.
A close look at the APC’s logo showed that it has no difference with those of the organisations, except colours combination.
The APC’s campaign symbol was designed with the colours of the party’s logo – red and green.
President Muhammadu Buhari had on Sunday at the launch of the Campaign Manual/Next Level Document at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, called on all Nigerians to join his administration on “this journey to the NEXT LEVEL of a prosperous, strong and stable Nigeria!”
When contacted on the telephone, Buhari Campaign Organisation spokesperson, Festus Keyamo SAN, explained that the original logo adopted by the campaign team was not plagiarised.
He said: “For those attacking logo instead of ideas, kindly take a look at the OFFICIAL LOGO released by the PMB/PYO campaign team which appears on the policy document and in adverts. Then take a look at the American University logo. The difference is clear.
“The other similar logo being circulated is obviously from one of the millions and millions of supporters who are willing to do their own adaptations. So, for the logo-chasers, back to the issues at stake!!!!”
The “Change begins with me” is part of his initiatives to end corruption, mismanagement and poverty despite in Nigeria.
In a speech delivered after his victory on November 4, 2008, Obama told a crowd of supporters: “Let’s resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship and pettiness and immaturity that has poisoned our politic
s for so long.
“So let us summon a new spirit of patriotism, of responsibility, where each of us resolves to pitch in and work harder and look after not only ourselves but each other.
“Let us remember that, if this financial crisis taught us anything, it’s that we cannot have a thriving Wall Street while Main Street suffers.”
Copying the speech, Buhari said: “We must resist the temptation to fall back on the same partisanship, pettiness and immaturity that have poisoned our country for so long.
“Let us summon a new spirit of responsibility, spirit of service, of patriotism and sacrifice, Let us all resolve to pitch in and work hard and look after, not only ourselves but one another.
“What the current problem has taught us is that we cannot have a thriving army of rent seekers and vested interests, while the majority suffers.”
The President subsequently apologised and reportedly dismissed the Deputy Director said to have written the speech.
