FOLLOWING declaration of the All Progressives Congress as winner of Thursday’s local government elections in 9 local government areas of Plateau State, the main opposition party in the state, the Peoples Democratic Party, has alleged irregularities alleging that results were still at various collating centres when the State Independent Electoral Commission announced the results.
Even as the outcome of the election has sparked up protects in Mangu, Bassa, Kanke, Langtang North, Langtang South and Mikang local government areas of the state while the residence of the transitional chairman of Bassa council Mrs Sarah Bali was set on fire by protesters.
The Chairman Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) Mr Fabian Untung on Thursday declared the APC winner of the nine out of thirteen local governments where elections were conducted adding that results of the remaining council areas are still pending.
Addressing newsmen, the state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Hon. Damishi Sango said reports monitored across the state indicated that elections were peacefully conducted at the polling units where results were transmitted to the wards for collation adding that while voters were waiting to get PLASIEC announced the result, the electoral officers and returning officers had disappeared leaving room for anxiety.

According to him, while the results were abandoned, the State independent electoral commission announced the result, declaring APC winner of the result released in 9 local governments.
“From the foregoing, it is clear that Governor Simon Lalong and the ruling APC in the state, out of their desperation to hold on to power, even when it was clear that they have lost same are hell-bent on plunging the state into yet another needless political crisis.”
He appealed to the governor to allow good conscience to prevail and allow the will of the people, as spoken through the ballot to prevail adding while the PLASIEC chairman was announcing the results; voters were still guiding the ballots and results at various local government headquarters across the state.
Meanwhile, there was a protest in Mangu, Langtang North, Mikang and Bassa as supporters of PDP trooped out en masse to protest the outcome of the election while in Bassa there were reported cases of burning and destruction of properties. The house of the transition chairman of Bassa was set on fire by the protesters.
All attempt to get the chairman of the state Independent Electoral Commission, Mr Fabian Ntung to comment on the allegation of the irregularities proved abortive as his phone rang all through unpicked while the State Chairman of the APC Hon. Latep Dabang was still in a meeting as at the time of filing this report.
