Traders and business owners in Anambra State have been advised to reciprocate the government fight against insecurity in the state by paying their taxes as at when due.
The Commissioner for Trade and Commerce in the state, Uche Okafor stated this in Awka at a stakeholders meeting on COVID-19 palliatives for Traders and Business Owners in the state.
He said it would amount to injustice refusal to pay taxes to a government that had provided the enabling environment for business activities, including security of lives and property.
He recalled how challenging it was for both traders and investors to carry out their businesses following prevalent insecurity situation in the state as they were frequently attacked by gunmen.
He said, “For us at the market Departments, we’ve been working. We just flagged off our debt recovery team to man the three senatorial zones to enforce total compliance on Internal Revenue Generation (IGR).
“All these are in appreciation to the efforts of the governor in guaranteeing security in Anambra. Before now, these money for the taxes were being collected by armed robbers as a result of the high level of insecurity.
“But the whole story is now history. Since armed robbers no longer snatch the money from us, it’s only wise for us to keep paying our taxes to ensure the security is sustained.”
While commending the management of the Internal Revenue Service for its commitment towards ensuring increase in tax payment, the Commissioner pledged the Ministry’s continued support.
He said, “It’s the level of dedication you’ve put in the work that made people wonder the secret to the magic. We’ll give you all the support to ensure you do more to move the state forward.
Earlier, Chairman, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service AiRS, Dr David Nzekwu had announced the commencement of 10percent tax deductions disbursement to traders and business owners in the state.
He said the refund which was in fulfilment of Governor Willie Obiano’s promise to traders as part of measures to cushion the effects of the pandemic would be remitted on-line.
